Jesus and his distant cousin John are contemporaries in ministry and yet one of them has the greater ministry of the two. John recognised that Jesus was of heaven and that he spoke the words of the Heavenly Father. John was of earth and he completed the mission entrusted to him, which was to be a forerunner to Jesus and to prepare the hearts of people to receive Him. His ministry involved baptising people who were repentant and desired to experience the kingdom of God.
While baptism is very important for every follower of Christ (if Jesus chose to be baptised we don’t get to opt out of it), what’s even more important is to live a life that bears the fruit of repentance and renewal. Repentance should be ongoing as long as we are alive for we will never be perfect. In Jesus, we can find ourselves forgiven and restored to keep moving forward by his empowering. Renewal is an everyday thing where we recommit our lives to God in order for him to cleanse, fill and use as He sees fit.
As we commit ourselves to repentance and renewal we will gradually find our role in the kingdom of God and can live life to the fullest possible potential!
Questions to ask yourself:
Is there anything that I need to repent for?
What is stopping me from giving myself wholly to the process of renewal?
Scripture Reading
Matthew 3:13-15
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
John 3:31
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.
Romans 14:17
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit
