Daily Devotional

Remember when you were just a little kid, and your parents felt like giants, almost like superheroes? In your small world, they were invincible, capable of anything. Now, looking at my 4-year-old son, I get the feeling he sees me in the same way (although I know it won’t last forever). He has this incredible trust in me and is in awe of what I can do and would do to protect him.

This psalm brings that image to mind. God is our Refuge and Strength – He is the One we can run to when we are in the deep trenches. He’s the Powerhouse we need when we feel powerless, way bigger than any mess we find ourselves in.

Let’s face it, we live in a messed-up world, and I bet your life’s got its share of pain and heartbreak. But here’s the truth – even in those moments when everything feels like it’s falling apart, we can take courage because none of it is too much for God. He’s not just greater than any disaster; He genuinely cares about us and is there to protect, like the superhero we thought our parents were when we were kids. He is the One who made everything after all!

God is like an Unshakeable Shelter we can always count on. His Power is the same One that brought Christ back from the dead (Romans 8:11) — take a moment to visualize that strength. But He doesn’t just protect, He is also the Giver of Life, like the river whose streams make glad the City of God; a river that is tranquil, constant, and sustaining, providing water and food.

So, in this season of Lent, let us be thankful to our God who cares immensely for the devastation we are in without Him. God saw the mess we were in separated from Him and He needed to change it. He so loved us that while we were sinners He sent His Son for us. Thank You for being the Refuge that keeps us from death and away from eternal suffering! It is because of Your Son’s Death and Resurrection that we are secure in You eternally. Jesus, You are our Greatest Gift. You are the True Superhero!

Prayer:
O God, help me to be in awe of how immense You are, and get a deeper grasp of Your Love and Power as I continue to look to You through all my ups and downs.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Given all that the Lord has done for us, how can we live like a river and share this incredible news with this messed up world around us?

Scripture Reading

Psalm 46:1-4

“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! Interlude A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High.”

Psalm 46:7

“The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.

  1. I feel that he has and does protect me and others. I wonder how many times disasters have been avoided that we weren’t even aware of. Thank you Lord for your protection.
