Martha opened her home to Jesus and made sure that everything was in order for Him. She was obviously a great host. Mary, her sister on the other hand just sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to Him speak. Jesus says that she had chosen “the better thing”. How was the better thing not helping out and just whiling away one’s time on the floor?
Mary had figured out what a lot of us today haven’t yet understood, that being with Jesus is more important than doing things for Jesus. We can serve at church, do good all through the week for the underprivileged, and even preach the word but if we don’t prioritise time with God to just listen to His voice, it would be the greatest loss! We could read the bible and pray regularly but setting aside time to be quiet and to hear the voice of God would be a game changer for every follower of Jesus.
Questions to ask yourself:
Will I try staying still for 5 min today and just allow God to speak to me?
Scripture Reading
Luke 10:38-42
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
