Devotional thought
“Give me faith to trust what You say”. This is one of the lyrics that we sing in our song of the day, and I whole-heartedly agree with this prayer! There are so many times throughout my day that I need to remind myself of what God says about things. I need to continually refresh my faith, believing that God is still with me and will never fail me!
I love the story in the Gospel of Mark 9 where a father brings his son to Jesus for deliverance. He cries out to Jesus, “I believe, help my unbelief!”. I can so relate with this statement, and I appreciate the vulnerability of a father in desperate need to see God intervene into his current situation! I have been there, and I remember thinking that I do not know how to “believe more”! There are times that we just can’t muster more faith, we do not know how to pray harder, we feel like there isn’t anything more we can do to try and get God to move in our situations.
We must remember that faith is being sure of what we hope for and convinced of what we do not see! Yes, it may be true that we are persistently crying out to God in complete faith, but that doesn’t mean that we are going to see an immediate move of God, right?
Our flesh is weak, like the disciples who kept falling asleep when Jesus asked them to pray with Him, and we selfishly want to see God move at our every beck and call. When we do not see that immediate gratification of our request, then our tendency is to get discouraged and give up. At this point we must do everything we can to be like this father who NEEDS to see God move!
We must persist in our prayers to the Lord, believing that He is working, believing that even if we don’t see it now He is working everything out for His good and His purposes! We cannot allow our flesh to take over and steal the blessing that we receive from faithful perseverance in the Spirit!
Questions for Reflection
- When was the last time you asked God to soften your heart and to increase your faith?
- Have you surrendered yourself to God in faith, believing Him for the results of your current situation?
- Are you praying to God often, and if not do you think this is an indication of the amount of faith you have in God?
Prayer
Oh God, I am so grateful that You are the Author and Perfecter of my faith! I trust You to increase my faith, to strengthen my faith, and to refine my faith as I trust in You. I repent of my unbelief right now and I ask You to reveal the hidden areas of unbelief my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
