When was the last time you used the word supreme? Other than making my taco a little bit juicier with some sour cream, this word has profound implications! Especially when we are talking of the name above all names, that is Jesus Christ. In this weeks song set for Eagleville Bible Church we are speaking a lot about the supremacy of Jesus Christ, and the gospel message. Here is the list of songs we are singing this week (5/2/21), and the Scriptures that go well with them:

Devotional Thought
OK, so let’s talk about supremacy and why it matters to us. Jesus Christ is the name above all names and His name holds the most authority in heaven and on earth! That means that He is supreme, there is none higher than Him! This should matter to us if we are His followers because that name is who we are associated with- CHRISTian.
Think of it like this; How much would it matter to you to have the backing, or representation of the Presidency associated with your name? It would matter a lot in our life because it would change our status and position in this world (sort of like being the Secretary of State, or an Ambassador to foreign nations on behalf of the President. Those people get treated and they live very differently simply because they are associated with the highest office in the land!) Well, because Jesus is our Lord, that means that the whole authority and weight that comes along with His name is Applied to our lives, the same as if our mom or dad was the president of the United States of America.
Phil 2:9-11 tells us that as a result of Jesus humbling Himself to the point of death and becoming our atoning sacrifice, God the Father was pleased and exalted Him to the highest position in heaven and earth, so that at His name every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord! You see, Jesus already has that position over everything, but until the end comes and each person faces that reality on judgement day we all have to make the decision to allow Jesus supremacy in our lives personally. It is a choice we have to make to bow our knee and confess with our mouth the Lordship of Jesus in our lives. Submission to His supremacy is the only way to receive the benefits of His Name; Protection, Authority, Blessing, Salvation, Hope, Love, etc. The reason we seek Jesus for these things is because He is the source from which all of these benefits flow!
Check out this Scripture from Colossians chapter 1:
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Colossians 1:15–22 (NIV):
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation
From the text above, can you see why having Jesus as your Supreme Authority matters? He is completely Holy and is the only way for us to be reconciled to God the Father! Because of what He accomplished on the cross, we can now stand as holy and blemish-free before the Father! This is why we sing, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, Holy Holy is He!”. It says that God was pleased to have all things reconciled to Him through Jesus.
- Are you reconciled to God the Father through Jesus Christ (meaning have you asked Jesus to be your Savior and Lord, to forgive your sins?)?
- What is stopping you from fully acknowledging the supremacy of Christ in your life?
- Are you trying to be reconciled by any other way than the Son of God?
- Will you decide to give Christ the position of supremacy in your life right now (if you have never given your life to Christ, just pray right now and ask His forgiveness as you acknowledge your sinfulness before Him and your belief that He is God and the only way for you to receive forgiveness and eternal life! If you are a born again believer in Christ, maybe right now you may have to confess that in certain areas of your life you still want to be the supreme authority and are resisting His authority. Confess it and repent, allow Jesus to have supremacy in every area of your life!)?
I really do hope and pray that the glorious good news of a Supreme Savior will provide hope for you as you receive and acknowledge His Lordship in your own life! I especially appreciate the verse above that says that in Him all things hold together! Does your life feel chaotic and undone? Maybe it is because you are not allowing the Supreme Savior to have supremacy in every area of your life.
You see, a Supreme Savior is Sufficient to meet all of your needs! There is nothing too great for Him, there is nothing that He cannot do, and there is nothing that you can do to exhaust His love for you! There really is nothing as comforting as knowing that the God of the universe is for you, that we are more than conquerors through Him, that His thoughts towards us are innumerable, and that His love for us cannot and will not ever fail, and that one day when He returns we will be caught up in the sky with Him to spend all of eternity in Heaven with our God!
One of the songs we are singing this week says, “Hope fills my soul, the love that You’ve shown brings refreshing like the rain!” I hope that as you encounter the love and supremacy of Christ today, you also will be able to feel that refreshing joy and peace He offers. Another lyric that we will sing is, “When darkness seems to hide His face, I rest on His unchanging grace….my anchor holds within the veil….through the storm He is Lord of all.”
O’ that God would reveal Himself as supreme in your struggles, pains, hurts, and joys! O’ that we would have the faith to trust in His unchanging grace at all times! O’ that this truth would refresh our spirits and bring us the encouragement and confidence we need to face the day ahead of us- knowing that the All-Sufficient, Supreme God of the universe calls us His son and daughter! Please Lord, revive our hearts and remind us of Whose we are, Amen!
God bless you as you trust in Him!
