Devotional thought
The term Hosanna literally means, “Oh, Lord, SAVE!” It is an expression of dependence upon God to intervene and deliver His people. It is an expression of adoration and praise for God’s saving strength too! It seems to be a Title that they gave to Jesus that is very similar to that of Messiah, or Lord, and that acknowledges His mission from God.
It is clear in Mark 11:9-10 that the words being shouted by the crowds from Psalm 118:25-26 (ESV) were a prophetic and symbolic representation of Jesus being proclaimed as the Messianic King. The people of that day were asking God to save them, and this procession into Jerusalem was an expression of praise in response to God sending the Messiah to deliver them – which is Jesus Christ!
The reason we sing Hosanna today is because we acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, and we cry out to Him from dependent hearts that want to see Him revive our land forever! We are thirsty for God’s presence to wipe away the fears, sins, chaos, etc., from our hearts, and to see Him establish His rule and reign on this earth now and forevermore! We sing to Jesus, the Hosanna of our lives, the One mighty to Save us, the One making us new, because He is worthy of all our praises!
I hope you can fully join into singing these words from this song today! Sing – “My heart is yearning, my eyes are turning to You, my fears are being washed away in Your presence, I am finding strength to face this day. Oh God, Come and have Your way in me!
Prayer
Thank You Hosanna, the mighty God who is able to save, for saving me and making me new in You! I love You Lord and I seek You now to give me strength to face the day ahead of me, and to rest in Your grace as I reflect upon the day behind me. I yearn to see You at work in my life and the lives of those I love. Please Lord, deliver me from all things that come against You, and help me to offer up my praises to You at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
