Devotional thought

When we think of captivity our natural thought is a jail, or prison, but I want us to focus on captivity in a spiritual way right now. We can find ourselves being held captive to; fear, loneliness, addictions, sloth, gossip, and/or basically anything that is ungodly – called sin!

For Israel, they were in bondage to the Egyptians at one time. They had grown accustomed to Egypt as their home and working towards strengthening its power in the world, but this was not what God had in mind for them. They were His chosen people and He had a plan to go in and rescue them from the hands of the captor – Pharaoh. He was arranging their deliverance while they were in slavery!

I wonder if you need to hear that today? I do not know what you are facing right now, the trials you are facing, the captivity you are feeling, but I know that God is always planning a deliverance for those that are trapped! Do you trust Him? Have you cried out to Him for deliverance? Do you recognize your need for His delivering strength?

When God did deliver them out of Egypt through the Red Sea, the children that He rescued began complaining and stopped trusting God’s plan of deliverance for them! They actually started to ask Moses to let them go back to the familiarity of life in Egypt (slavery, torcher, and all other sorts of captive living) so that they would not need to worry being forsaken by God and left for dead in the wilderness.

I know this to be true for many of us as well. There are times we choose to go back to the familiar place of captivity when things get hard instead of trusting in the perfect plan of God who is carrying out His plan of deliverance even now!

We must learn to remain steady and resolved in trusting God’s work of deliverance. We must reject fears influence over us and allow God’s power and strength to keep us on the path up out of our captivity! He is faithful, we must only look to Him for our salvation.

Prayer

Oh Lord, I praise You for providing me with deliverance and freeing me from the power of captivity to sin! You have blessed me with everything I need to live free of anything that keeps me from You, and I give You thanks for that! Forgive me for at times turning back to my captor, for choosing captivity again, for desiring the familiar over faith! I choose to look to You now and to trust in Your plan of redemption in my life. Thank You, my Deliverer Jesus. Amen.
