Jeremiah prophesied to a nation that was overconfident in their own wisdom, their military and allies, and in their prosperity and wealth. False prophets and teachers would shout down Jeremiah, and the words of God, and assure the people everything in their life was perfectly fine. God was pleased with them surely by how blessed they were. However, we know this not to be true as exile and judgment were imminent. Instead of boasting or being confident in their own devices, God was instead encouraging the people to be confident in their knowledge and understanding of Him. Salvation and security were found only for those who practiced this understanding with credible evidence of change. Not in what they wanted to believe and hear, or empty words of agreement that led only to unrepentant and uncircumcised hearts. Here, only judgment and punish await…
