Daily Devotional

A Roman centurion had immense authority by human standards. He had servants and a group of soldiers who he commandeered. This centurion was obviously a select one, for he showed compassion for the needs of one of his servants. It wasn’t for a family member that he approached Jesus but for an employee. Furthermore, he seemed to understand the power and authority that Jesus possessed over the natural and supernatural realm that he implores him to just “speak a word” believing that the word He speaks would heal his servant. His faith is admired by Jesus himself and to top it all he was a gentile not a Jew. He may have been one of the first gentiles who believed in Jesus and took Him at His word.

We oftentimes forget just how powerful the name of Jesus is. We forget the authority that he possesses over the seen and unseen realms. We live fearful and without an understanding of just how powerful and mighty He is. We often give the devil more credit and air time than we do for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It may be time to change that!

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Have I been fixating on the enemy’s involvement in my life rather than focusing on God’s plans for me?
  • How can I live more confidently by being aware of the authority that Jesus has, over everything in the seen and unseen world?

Scripture Reading

Matthew 8:5-13

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.

Philippians 2:9-11

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  1. “What a powerful Name it is, the Name of Jesus…” 🎶. ”speak the Word and my servant will be healed” 1 John 1:1b NLT “He [Jesus] is the Word of life.”

  2. I trust and believe in the wonder working Power of the name of Jesus! I am focused this morning on deepening my faith in Jesus through consitant prayer and the studying of scripture. I strive to live a life that reflects His teaching and I trust in the promises of The Word. I am so grateful for God’s grace in my life! His is the name above every name, the name of Jesus

  3. The part about giving the devil too much air time and credit is so true. I think I do this sometimes by being under fear and worry. “What did this mean” or “watch out for this”. I need to refocus and trust in God. One of my favorite sayings is. “He got me this far! ” it reminds me he’s brought me to were I am at now and through alot and he is not just going to give up on me.

  4. Wow!!! I needed that first question! I tend to get so focused on using discernment to identify the enemy’s schemes that I lose focus on what God is doing!!! Love this reading today!
