Daily Devotional
We see the sad unravelling of Adam and Eve’s family in today’s reading where Cain kills his brother Abel in a fit of rage, jealousy and maybe insecurity. It’s interesting to read that Abel somehow knew what would please God and do accordingly while Cain chose to do what pleased him and ended up displeasing God. While he could have always repented and made amends he chose a wicked shortcut which left him all alone in a field with his dead sibling. The conversation that ensues between him and God is sad and disturbing all at once. Sad because God knows what happened and is saddened over the unnecessary death of Abel, disturbing because Cain seems to be unperturbed about the murder he has committed. The conversation takes a darker turn as God tells him that Cain is now cursed by the ground which has absorbed Abel’s blood and so he will be a vagabond and wanderer for the rest of his life. God does display his extravagant grace though, in marking Cain, so that he is not murdered by anyone for the rest of his life on earth. God’s grace is available to even the most vile of sinners. It depends on the sinner to accept this grace through faith in Jesus and be saved! (Ephesians 2:8)
Questions to ask yourself:
- Are you aware of God’s grace on your life?
- Where have you withheld grace from others?
- Will you ask God to convict you of any sinful attitudes in your life?
Scripture Reading
Genesis 4:3-15
In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” But the LORD said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

Nothing is hidden from God.
Even in Cain’s jealousy and sin, God pursued him with warnings, discipline, and ultimately mercy, showing that His grace extends even to the worst of sinners.
Was curious about the mark left on Cain. Possibly these could be Nomadic people’s in that area of the world. I guess the lesson is don’t let the mark of sin plague you. Praise God we have a way to remove that mark through Christ.
Sin is always crouching at the door
Reading this just fills me full of gratitude. Nothing I have done can seperate me from the love of my Father. God’s grace is sufficient for each and everyone of us. I must remember to extend that Grace out from the Source within.
Thank you Lord for your amazing grace. Let me extend it to others. Have a blessed day all❤️🙏😇
I see God’s grace in both the expected and unexpected—the doors that open, the strength to endure, and the peace that comes even in uncertainty. It’s a constant reminder that I’m never navigating life alone. His grace is sufficient and I am wise to never forget that gift.
John 1:16. Grace for Grace. The emphasis of superabundance of grace that has been displayed by God towards mankind.
Caines reaction, “My punishment is more than I can bear…I will be hidden from your presence.” struck me differently today. I always focused on the fact that Caines rejected offering was from the ground- and that God took away his lively hood as a punishment. But today, I see that it wasn’t just his lively hood- it was his ability to give offerings to God that was taken away as well. Caine felt the weight of being distant from God and it was heartbreaking.
Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice, thank you for tearing the veil that separates us from you, thank you that we can come into your presence. Thank you that even in our wandering and shortcomings- you see us and you mark us. Amen
