The quality, not the quantity of our faith matters as evidenced in this incident where a young boy who was demon-possessed was set free by Jesus. Jesus rebukes his disciples for their lack of faith which was responsible for leaving the boy bound and shackled by the enemy. It’s embarrassing to hear Jesus tell us that all we need is mustard seed size faith for Him to do great things because it’s obvious that we have often lacked faith of even that size. He doesn’t stop there, he directs our hearts and minds toward the stupendous power of an unbridled faith. He says we can relocate a mountain, something impossible in the natural realm on an ordinary day. What he means is that nothing will be impossible for us who believe! Nothing? If Jesus said nothing – it’s the truth. Our faith doesn’t have to be the size of a mountain. We need bite-sized faith packed with an unbeatable trust in God and his ability to do what only He can do. Faith mixed with doubt is no faith at all.

So what are we waiting for? Let’s begin believing God, taking Him at His word and shaking the world up for Him.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What is the quality of your faith?
  • Is doubt or fear adulterating your faith?

Scripture Reading

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Matthew 17:14-20

When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
