When we live on the earth we are citizens of the earth, specifically the country of our birth. When we accept Jesus into our lives, we are adopted into the family of God, and are then citizens of heaven. This doesn’t mean that we are exempt from our earthly roles and duties. It just means that we now have dual citizenship. This means that while we walk the earth, work at our jobs, run our families and interact with others, we must fulfill the tasks that are expected of us. It also means that we do everything be it our career or our divine calling with the utmost devotion to God, seeking to please Him and display His love to a watching world. The divide between the sacred and secular disappears when we live as people of dual citizenship.
Questions to ask yourself:
Am I being a faithful citizen to my country of residence?
Am I living responsibly as a citizen of heaven on earth?
Scripture Reading
Matthew 17:25-27
“Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?” “From others,” Peter answered. “Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”
Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
