Parenting Through Problems – Genesis 16:1-16
In this Mother’s Day sermon, we delve into the story of Sarah, Hagar, and Abraham from Genesis 16:1-16. Sarah, unable to have children, persuades Abraham to conceive a child with her servant Hagar. When Hagar becomes pregnant, tensions rise, leading to conflict. An angel of the Lord intervenes, directing Hagar to return and submit to Sarah, demonstrating God’s care and involvement. This narrative offers lessons on humility, the pitfalls of pride, and trusting in God’s plan for our families.
Key Points:
Parent in Humility (Genesis 16:1-6):
Narrative: Sarah, feeling the weight of her inability to bear children, suggests that Abraham have a child with Hagar. When Hagar becomes pregnant, she looks down on Sarah, leading to conflict. Sarah then mistreats Hagar, who flees.
Lesson: Sarah’s pride and impatience led to poor decisions and conflict. Parenting with humility involves recognizing our limitations and trusting in God’s timing.
Recognize the Dangers of Pride:
Human Pride: Sarah’s desire to have a child led her to prioritize her own will over God’s. Her actions caused strife and suffering for herself and Hagar.
Application: Pride can lead us to make decisions based on cultural norms or personal desires, rather than seeking God’s guidance. It can also cause us to look down on others and blame them for our own shortcomings.
Take Responsibility in the Family:
Abraham’s Role: Abraham’s passive response to the conflict between Sarah and Hagar demonstrates a lack of leadership. He fails to address the situation directly, allowing tension to grow.
Application: Responsible parenting involves actively addressing issues and setting boundaries to maintain harmony and righteousness in the family.
Trust in God’s Guidance:
Hagar’s Return: The angel of the Lord tells Hagar to return and submit to Sarah, emphasizing humility and obedience. Despite the hardship, this was the path to peace and blessing.
Application: Sometimes, the right path involves difficult actions and humility. Trusting in God’s guidance, even when it’s hard, brings about His blessings.
Acknowledge God’s Presence and Care:
El Roi: Hagar names God “El Roi,” meaning “the God who sees me,” recognizing His awareness and care in her distress. God assures her of His plans for her and her son.
Application: God sees and cares about our struggles and is actively involved in our lives. We can trust in His presence and provision, even in challenging circumstances.
Conclusion:
This Mother’s Day, let’s commit to parenting with humility, taking responsibility, and trusting in God’s guidance. By recognizing the dangers of pride and embracing God’s active presence in our lives, we can nurture our families according to His will. Through humility and trust, we can find peace and blessing in our parenting journey.

Certainty – Genesis 15:7
In Genesis 15:7, we explore God’s assurance to Abraham, focusing on how we can be certain in our faith even amidst uncertainties. Our goal is to understand how a steadfast trust in God’s character and promises can elevate our spiritual journey.
Key Points:
Certainty in God’s Character:
Genesis 15:7 reminds us that God is unchanging and truthful. His nature is consistent, providing us with a reliable foundation.
The natural order, such as the precise timing of the sunrise and tides, reflects God’s dependability.
Remembering God’s Past Faithfulness:
Just as God reminded Abraham of being brought out of Ur, we should recall God’s past interventions in our lives.
Reflecting on historical and personal testimonies of God’s faithfulness strengthens our trust in His ongoing support.
Gratitude for the Present:
Recognizing and being thankful for our current blessings helps us stay grounded. Like Samuel’s Ebenezer stone, it reminds us of God’s help “thus far.”
Acknowledging our present position as part of God’s plan boosts our confidence in His continued faithfulness.
Trusting in God’s Purpose:
God has a divine purpose for each of us. His plans often involve moving us from one phase to another with intentionality.
Abraham’s promised land signifies God’s greater purpose, teaching us to trust in His long-term vision for our lives.
Following God’s Lead and Doing Right:
In moments of uncertainty, continue doing what is right. Abraham’s obedience in preparing the sacrifice exemplifies faithfulness in small tasks.
Spiritual preparedness, through prayer and Scripture, is crucial as we wait for God’s timing.
Hanging on to God’s Promises:
God’s covenant with Abraham highlights His unwavering commitment. His promises are unconditional and backed by His character.
Embracing the certainty of God’s promises, such as salvation and provision, helps us navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
Conclusion:
To cultivate certainty in our faith, we must reflect on God’s past faithfulness, express gratitude for the present, and trust in His future plans. By fully trusting in God, we can rise above uncertainties, grounded in the assurance of His unchanging nature and promises.
Join us as we delve into how embracing “Certainty” can transform our spiritual journey, offering us peace, assurance, and strength for the road ahead.

Don’t Stop Believing – Genesis 15:1
In this inspiring sermon, “Don’t Stop Believing,” we delve into Genesis 15:1 to explore the profound message of faith and trust in God’s promises. God’s word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” This powerful message challenges us to hear God’s voice, ask questions in faith, and believe in His promises even before they come to pass.
Challenge: Don’t Stop Believing
A. FAITH HEARS FROM GOD
Verse 1: “After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.’”
God’s word to Abram addresses the deep concerns of his heart, providing comfort and reassurance. Whether through a thunderous voice or a still small whisper, God’s word is powerful and paramount. In a world filled with various voices, it’s crucial to tune into the right one—God’s voice.
B. FAITH ASKS QUESTIONS
Verses 2-3: Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless, and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
It’s okay to ask questions and seek understanding from God, just as Abram did. When we approach God with respect, acknowledging His sovereignty, we can present our concerns and uncertainties, trusting that He is in control.
C. FAITH BELIEVES BEFORE IT SEES
Verses 4-6: “Then the word of the Lord came to him: ‘This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.’ He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’ Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.”
Faith involves believing in God’s power and promises before they are fulfilled. Just as Abram believed God’s promise of countless descendants, we too must trust in God’s word, even when the fulfillment seems impossible.
Join us as we explore these timeless truths and encourage one another to keep believing in God’s promises, no matter the circumstances.
