Devotional thought

There is so much negative discussion around the idea of slavery. And don’t get me wrong, I am absolutely against the slavery of a human to another human! But, in today’s devotional I want to discuss the important truth of the Word of God which says that we are slaves spiritually, either to the good or the bad.

Romans 6:16 gives us an amazing insight into this subject. Read this text:

Do you not know that if you present yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or obedience resulting in righteousness?

Romans 6:16 (NET 2nd ed.)

What are you a slave to? Sin that leads to death, or righteousness that leads to eternal life? It is so clear that we are slaves to something, but the choice is ours on who or what will be our “master”. Take a look at your life and ask which master you are obeying. Is it sin or righteousness that is calling the shots for you?

The following verse in Romans 6 tells us how to make sure that we have the right “master” directing our lives.

But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were entrusted to,

Romans 6:17 (NET 2nd ed.)

Obedience to the message of the Gospel will lead us to the proper Master, Jesus Christ. When we accept Him as our Lord, He becomes our Master, and our allegiance changes! Our “master” becomes righteousness, purity, truth, godliness, etc. We become slaves to things that are godly, and I know that our world could use more of that today!

So, who is your master? Are you a slave to sin or righteousness? Does fear rule your life, or confidence produced by faith? Is insecurity directing your thoughts, or are you secure in your identity as a child of God? Consider these things today and become enslaved to righteousness!

Prayer

Father in Heaven, I praise You for changing me and my desires. Praise You for being my righteous Master. I submit myself to You and Your ways. I want to make You the ruler over all of my actions and thoughts. Thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit to direct my steps and to lead me into righteousness! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
