Conviction

READ: John 16:8
CHALLENGE: Get Some Conviction.

16:7 – But very truly I tell you, it is for you good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
v.8 – When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.
Let’s talk about this major role of the Holy Spirit. He convicts. Perhaps when you think of the word conviction, you think about a court case where someone is found guilty. They are indicted, tried, and if the evidence is beyond a shadow of doubt, they are convicted by a jury of their peers and then sentenced. In this case, the word is used of the Holy Spirit convincing us about the topics of wrong, right, and judgment. The NIV translates this as “prove wrong about”. The ESV and CSB and NLT say “convict”. To convict means “to expose, to cross-examine for the ”. It can also mean to “blame, convict, punish”. It can be used of divine correction and punishment for the purpose of improvement. It’s often used of rebuke and correction. He’s shining the light on our sin so we can snap out of denial and get it.

A. THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS ABOUT SIN

Hebrews 12:12-15 – See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. as you did in the rebellion.” Believe in Jesus. Don’t harden your heart.

B. THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS ABOUT RIGHTEOUSNESS
V10 – about righteousness,; Righteousness means to do what’s right in accordance with the standard set by God.

C. THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS ABOUT JUDGMENT

(v11) V11 – and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

John 12:31 – Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

John 14:30 – I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world, Satan has no hold over Jesus at all. He has no hold or power over you either. You’re free.

Hebrews 2:14-15 – Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Colossians 1:13 – For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Hebrews 9:27 – Just as people are destined to die once,, There is a coming judgment. There is accountability. The Judgment Seat of Christ is for believers. The Great White Throne judgment for those who did not know Jesus.

Hebrews 10:31 says it’s a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

John 3:36 – Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,.
